**Crime and Safety Updates from Caldwell Police Department for 2024**
The Caldwell Police Department has released its annual report on crime and traffic statistics for 2024, showcasing both progress and challenges in maintaining safety in the growing community. Below are the key takeaways from the report:
- **Part I Crimes Slightly Decreased**: Serious crimes categorized as Part I Crimes, including offenses like homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary, saw a slight decrease of 0.32%. This accounts for three fewer victims compared to 2023, even as the city's population continues to grow.
- **Traffic Incidents Improved in Key Areas**: Traffic crashes in Caldwell showed some notable improvements:
- For the last quarter of 2024, traffic crashes decreased by 22.6%.
- Caldwell Boulevard experienced a significant 32% drop in crashes.
- Hit-and-run incidents declined by 10%, and injury crashes dropped by 6.9%.
- Overall traffic numbers, however, showed a minor increase of 0.4% compared to 2023.
- **Property and Violent Crimes**:
- Property crimes saw a substantial reduction, decreasing by 32% in the last four weeks of 2024.
- Homicides were down 66%, dropping from three incidents in 2023 to just one in 2024.
- Rape cases decreased by 12%.
- Aggravated assaults increased primarily due to a 16% rise in domestic violence incidents. Without domestic violence cases, aggravated assaults were actually down by 2.4%.
- **Theft Levels Remain Steady**: Theft cases ended 2024 consistent with 2023 rates. Proactive measures, such as focused foot patrols in retail areas like Walmart and D&B, contributed to deterring theft and fostering community trust.
- **Fewer Shooting Incidents**: Shooting incidents saw a major drop, decreasing by 30% compared to 2023. This is also a 28% reduction from 2022, reflecting ongoing efforts to address gun violence.
The Caldwell Police Department credits these improvements to focused crime analysis and directed patrols tackling graffiti, vandalism, and juvenile problems in high-priority areas. Community collaboration has also played a key role in these positive changes.
Although the city wrestled with increases in domestic violence, the report highlighted the need for continued efforts to raise awareness, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable.
Caldwell Police thanked both officers and community members for their contributions to keeping the city safe and encouraged everyone to stay vigilant as they move forward into 2025.
